Senigallia City of Photography continues its commitment to promoting and showcasing great international photography, dedicating a new exhibition to one of the most important and significant Italian collections.
Through the books on display, it will be possible to explore the evolution of photographic language, from the pioneering images of Lisetta Carmi to the experimental works of Marina Ballo Charmet and Alessandra Spranzi, up to the more recent linguistic exercises of Claudia Petraroli, Sara Rossi, and other significant international photographers. Since the 1960s, photography has been able to reflect on major socio-political changes, and the works in the collection document and analyze them from a special, all-female observatory: the body and its transformations, everyday experience and family life, the relationship between private and collective memory, the dialogue between photography and other languages. The heart of the exhibition is based precisely on this last point, starting with the books and "exploding" them in the exhibition space.
The exhibition allows for a thorough analysis of the evolution of publishing: from the most experimental artist books to institutional photography catalogs to today's agile self-productions. The transversality of visual language and the increasingly close relationship between photography and contemporary art are leading artists to use the photographic medium in conjunction with other expressive pursuits; therefore, the exhibition highlights this important evolution in female creativity. The exhibition also features a small selection of artist videos, allowing viewers to appreciate how the style and thinking of each of the exhibited artists can manifest itself in multiple languages simultaneously: artist books, photographic prints, and video research. These are complemented by a selection of videos in which books are manually leafed through. The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication, published by Danilo Montanari Editore, conceived as a collaborative work, in which the images of the selected authors meet for the first time and engage in dialogue with one another, with the book as their common element.
